AI Summary: IndexNow lets a site notify participating search engines that a URL changed, but the notification is not an indexing or ranking command. Validate ownership with a key file, submit canonical URLs, handle response codes and rate limits, and keep sitemap and crawl access in place as separate discovery infrastructure.

What IndexNow does

IndexNow's official documentation [1] describes an HTTP protocol for notifying participating search engines when a URL has been added, updated, or deleted. A successful response tells you that a submission was received. It does not tell you that a crawler fetched the page, that the page was accepted into an index, or that the page will rank or appear in an AI answer.

For a single URL, the documented pattern is an HTTPS request to a participating engine's IndexNow endpoint with URL-escaped url and a key. The key must use the documented character rules and length range. Ownership is proved by hosting a UTF-8 text key file on the same host, either at the root or at an allowed key location. A key location scopes which URLs the key can authorize, so key-file placement and submitted host must be reviewed together.

Batch and operations

A batch request uses JSON with a host, key, and urlList; the official documentation allows up to 10,000 URLs in one POST. Submit only URLs that changed and use the canonical URL scheme.

IndexNow complements, rather than replaces, robots.txt, XML sitemaps, canonical links, useful internal links, and a page that returns a stable successful response. Do not expose a private key in client bundles or embed it in an article. Keep submission logs free of credentials and review the rate limit behavior before automating a large content migration.

Verification checklist

Create a test key file in a controlled host and confirm that it is reachable over HTTPS with the exact key value. Submit one changed canonical URL and record the request shape, response code, and timestamp. For a batch, verify that every URL belongs to the declared host and that the payload is valid JSON. Finally, confirm that sitemap and crawl controls still describe the same public URL set.

IndexNow is valuable when a site has reliable change events and wants to reduce notification delay with participating engines. It is not a substitute for quality, accessibility, stable semantics, or an indexing guarantee.
