AI Summary: Core Web Vitals measure loading, interactivity, and visual stability for real users. They matter to users and Google's ranking systems; response time, status, caching, and HTML affect crawl efficiency. No evidence here shows every AI crawler consumes CWV scores, so test fetch behavior separately.
What Core Web Vitals measure
Google defines CWV as field metrics for loading, interactivity, and stability: LCP, INP, and CLS. Its good targets are LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP at 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS at 0.1 or less. [1]
These metrics describe browser experience. Field data is needed; lab tools help catch regressions but do not replace it. [4]
| Metric | Measures | Question |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | Loading | Does main content appear promptly? |
| INP | Responsiveness | Does interaction respond promptly? |
| CLS | Stability | Does the layout stay in place? |
Separate browser UX from crawl health
Google says CWV are used by ranking systems, but good scores do not guarantee top rankings; relevance still matters and there is no single page-experience signal. [1] [2]
Crawl efficiency is another layer. Google says connection time, latency, TTFB, 5xx, and 429s can affect crawl capacity. It recommends efficient loading, caching, current sitemaps, and short redirect chains. [3]
The precise conclusion is that a slow or failing origin can make fetching harder; a Core Web Vitals score is not a universal AI-crawler score.
Test the AI-facing fetch path
For each key route, record status, redirects, TTFB, response time, content type, body size, and meaningful HTML without interaction. Check logs for 4xx, 5xx, 429, timeouts, and blocked resources.
Do not infer AI-crawler behavior from Lighthouse. Good field metrics can coexist with an empty shell, while complete HTML can coexist with poor interactivity. Test both.
Use a two-layer contract
For people, measure LCP, INP, and CLS in the field; use lab traces to diagnose. For fetch clients, measure response, status, canonical HTML, caching, and accessible content. Keep evidence separate.
Improve CWV because users experience them and Google documents their Search role. They are not proof an AI system will crawl, retrieve, rank, or cite a page.
